I recently experienced the ugly misfortune of dealing with some nasty Trustees in my complex. It got me quite wound-up, and I need to address the bulldozing tactics

of people in power, that’s so often overlooked in adulthood. Bullying doesn’t always end at school, but that doesn’t mean you should have to put up with it.

Bullies often grow up, leave the playground, and become that intimidating boss or colleague, your controlling partner, an unruly neighbour, the Chairman of the body corporate, a relentless sales rep, a condescending family member, your shaming ‘so-called’ friend, or, in my case, a nasty gang of Complex Trustees.

what defines an adult bully - Nikki Munitz Counsellor South Africa

So, what defines an adult bully?

Often, it’s the person that leaves you feeling oppressed, belittled, humiliated,

manipulated, or drained. They tend to engage regularly in behaviours that

are framed by cruel, thoughtless, or abusive action.

Delivering their ill-intent in the form of personal insults, ridiculing jokes, threats, public shaming, crossing your personal boundary or in an unwanted

invasion of your space.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that bullies prey on those they perceive as weaker than. So, by remaining passive and compliant, you make yourself the target, or remain one. Many bullies are also cowards, so as soon as their victims stand up for their rights and show backbone, the bully backs down. Being more

assertive when you’re around them is key – and here’s where the practise of personal self-esteem comes into play.
